23:56 TPC-H Run on MySQL 5.1 and 6.0MySQL Performance Blog» Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

We were doing MySQL Performance evaluation on TPC-H queries for the client and they kindly allowed us to publish results which are very interesting.
This is obviously not audited TPC-H run, and it can???t be because we used MyISAM tables which are not ACID complaint. Plus we only measured Power to keep things simple.

We tested 10G and 100G data sets which was CPU bound and IO bound box on the Dell 2950 box w 16G of RAM which we used for testing. Even though box had 8 cores it is little use for MySQL as only one query is ran concurrently, same can be told about 8 hard drives which this box had.
MySQL Also was very slow running some queries so we changed scripts a bit to kill extremely long running queries to get results for others this means we can???t really get a valid TPC-H result from MySQL,though at least we get to see performance of individual queries.
We also packaged the toolset we used for benchmarks so you can repeat them if you like. It can be downloaded here

So let us first take a look at MySQL 5.1.23 vs 6.0.4 results for 10GB data set which ???fits in memory???. The cut-off time for this test was 1 hour so query taking over 1 hour has NA. Times are given in seconds.
Ratio is MySQL 6.0 time divided by MySQL 5.1 time so if it is less than 1 MySQL 6.0 is faster if more than 1 slower:

As you can see for 10G results there is only one query which does not complete within an hour in 5.1 and MySQL 6.0 can complete all queries within an hour.
We can also see MySQL 6.0 improving query 20 speed dramatically, the rest of the queries is however close and MySQL 6.0 is even significantly slower than 5.1 for
number of queries. Honestly I expected more from MySQL 6.0 optimizer improvements effort.

100GB Results are more interesting because this is database size for which you can find results published on TPC Web site. For example These Are results recently published for Microsoft SQL Server.
Of course this is much more powerful system but still you can get an idea - This system has geomean of 7.7 sec for Power test which is good order of magnitude better compared to MySQL results on 10G database.
TPC does discourage from comparing results against different database sizes so let???s see 100G data set results.
In this case we set cut-off time to 3 hours to give MySQL more time to complete the queries:

As you can see on 100G data set MySQL 5.1 could only complete 10 out of 22 queries within 3hours run time allowed for each query and MySQL 6.0 has similar number of queries it can execute in reasonable time frame. There 2 queries (Query8 and Query20) which MySQL 6.0 does better but there is also Query11 in which significant regression is observed. As a Summary: We can see MySQL capabilities to run complex analytics queries, in particular those presented in TPC-H benchmark are still subpar even with changes which are currently seen in MySQL 6.0 tree. There is a long way till Release and may be MySQL 6.0 performance will improve. Though considering a lot of talks about optimizer improvements in MySQL 6.0 I expected drastically better results.
Though may we should not be as surprised by these results - MySQL 6.0 still does not have hash or merge join which are frequently used for these kind of queries, and there is also no query parallelization which would allow MySQL to use CPUs and hard drives this system has more efficiently. Parallel query will be growing issue for MySQL because CPUs just continue to add more cores. Having 2 CPUs and being able to use only half of system CPU resources for query processing was not too bad, however with 16,32,64 cores it is just too bad.

Tomorrow will be my last day here working at Opera Software.

After working the past year and a half with some very talented people, I???ve decided to leave Opera and work on something new.

Being part of a team that literally has an effect on millions of people on a daily basis is truly an amazing thing and something that not many people get to do. With the exploding popularity of the Web, the browser is perhaps the most used application on the computer (and soon, maybe, even on the phone).

Before joining Opera, I was blogging here on Opera Watch for a few years as an observer to and outsider of the company. Now that I???ve been on the inside, I???ve learned much about Opera and the browser industry.

I???ve been privileged to work with a great group of people, many of whom I always wanted to meet prior to joining Opera.

Ever since I started using Opera on my computer around 7 years ago, I???ve been a fan. And now with Opera Mini, I???m leaving Opera a bigger fan than when I first joined.

I use Opera Mini on a daily basis; I???ve become a huge fan. I???m extremely amazed to see what our developers have been able to accomplish with this tiny, cool browser. In fact, I continue to be impressed every time I see new capabilities and features added to Opera Mini. It???s an amazing feat for an application with less than 100kb in size.

As a fan of Opera, I hope that Opera will continue to push the envelope and help the Web move forward in terms of implementing Web standards and coming forth with new ideas.

I???ll always be proud to say ???I worked for a company that made Opera Mini, Opera for the Wii, Opera for the computer, Opera Mobile, and Opera on the devices.???

23:56 Download YouTube Videos as MP4 FilesGoogle Operating System» Fenng's shared items in Google Reader

An interesting side-effect of YouTube's recent push for higher quality videos is that most videos can be downloaded as MP4 files directly from YouTube. Until now, you could only get FLV files from your browser's cache or using one of the many websites that let you download YouTube videos. In fact, to download the MP4 files, you need to use the same URL like for FLV files and append "&fmt=18":

ID is the video's identification value, SIGNATURE is a value that prevents you from downloading the file just by knowing the ID. You could create this URL by looking at the source code of a YouTube page, but it's much easier to automatically generate it.

One way is to save the following link as a bookmarklet by dragging it to your Links bar (in Firefox, Opera) or right-clicking and adding it to your favorites (in Internet Explorer):

When you want to download a YouTube video, click on the bookmarklet and you should see a new option below the embeddable code.

Because YouTube doesn't send the right MIME type, you shouldn't click on the download link. Right-click and select "save link as" or "save target as" and enter a proper name for the video. Make sure to use the .mp4 extension when you enter the filename.

Having to click on the bookmarklet is annoying, so this Greasemonkey script is a better alternative because it adds the download link automatically. It requires the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox or a similar plug-in for userscripts. Opera has built-in support for userscripts, so you only need to go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content > JavaScript options, select the directory where you will put your script and copy the script to that directory.

YouTube's MP4 files have a higher resolution, stereo sound and can be played with applications like VLC, MPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime. Not all YouTube videos can be downloaded as MP4 files and the fallback format is FLV.

Note that YouTube's terms of use require you "not to access User Submissions or YouTube Content through any technology or means other than the video playback pages of the Website itself, the YouTube Embeddable Player, or other explicitly authorized means YouTube may designate," so these scripts could break YouTube's policies. The scripts only download files that are used by YouTube's player, so you may also find the videos in your browser's cache.

This is about Google App Engine which probably everyone has read about already.

I???m quite excited about it. Hosting has been the bane of the Python web world for a long time. This provides a very compelling hosting situation for Python applications.

I???m not as interested in this from a competitive perspective as I am from a simple this-is-awesome perspective. Regardless of how this positions Python relative to other languages, this is something Python needs. But even looking beyond that, I think this is something the open source world needs. Open source web development is in a funny place. There???s a lot of reasons why web programming is a good domain for open source. The barrier to entry for web development is extremely low. Developers have choice in their tools, as browsers don???t really care what software you use so long as you serve up HTML. This leads to experimentation and excitement and the kind of self-direction that is very motivating to developers. It leads to the kind of personal excitement that underlies most open source development.

Despite this, open source web application development doesn???t seem sustainable. There???s some applications, sure. WordPress, Trac, MediaWiki, MoinMoin. But most wiki software doesn???t have a vibrant community. Many a bug tracker has fallen by the wayside. Blog software projects have a horrible time building a viable community. Other website software hardly gets anywhere at all. A lot of the development that might appear to be application development really is more like a framework when you look closely (e.g., Plone, Drupal).

I think deployment concerns are a huge part of this. And, given its better deployment story, it???s no surprise PHP is the basis of most viable open source web applications. Being interested in a project requires that you be able to use the product (and usually use it casually, as that???s the point of entry for many developers). Right now most people can???t use open source web applications.

But people can use hosted applications, and that???s where all the effort has gone in the past few years. I am comfortable saying that Trac is a better issue tracker than Google Code???s issue tracker. But I???d probably recommend Google Code to someone starting a new project, because it???s so much less work. Similarly I???d try to dissuade most people from installing their own blog software. I still don???t know what to tell people about a CMS.

Many people are excited about how far up you might be able to scale something based on App Engine, but (like Dave) I???m excited about how far it could be scaled down. For the majority of sites the free quota will be more than enough. But that alone isn???t the point: there???s lots of free services people can use. The difference here is that the free services can be modified and controlled by the anyone who signs up and installs an application.

From the perspective of open source it???s a bit awkward that the platform itself is proprietary. Questions about sharecropping are a valid concern, but I???m optimistic about the ultimate outcome. The SDK is under a permissive open source license, and the APIs are all reasonable enough that they could be reimplemented with open source backends (maybe without the same scalability, but that???s not the aspect I care about anyway). Perhaps the BigTable APIs will serve as the basis for future storage APIs.

But even if other people make compatible implementations of these APIs, would it matter? If Google offers free hosting, is someone else really going to be able to provide a better hosting option? Or would these other implementations just be strawmen, a way to show that It Could Be Done? If the libraries are just written to prove a point, I can???t see them gaining much traction. But I think these could be viable as there are other constraints to the App Engine environment that people may want to escape at some point in their application development.

As to the details of App Engine? Can you run Pylons or Paste on it? Well, that???s a topic for another post.

刚在邮件列表里看到通知，AWstats 发布了 6.8 Beta 版。

和上一次更新相比，新版本增加了特性不多：

Added OnlyUsers option.
Can show a full list for extrasection.
Can track RPC request.

如果要定制跟踪额外的访问信息，Extrasection 总是绕不过去的。还没测试这个版本，倒是希望这部分内容的配置能更清晰容易一些。

值得一提的是浏览器数据库的更新与 Patch 几乎都是中文搜索引擎与 Web 应用的爬虫相关，据我所知车东同学做了不少这方面的工作。

BTW: AWstats 堪称中小站点分析日志的不二之选。尽管这样，前段时间还是看到有些公司居然不了解这个好用的工具，嗯，推广之。

Probably one of the albums on Ad Noiseam which took the longest to complete. Begun years ago, Mad EP"s fourth full length album sees this highly praised musician focus on low frequencies and everything which comes with them. Syncopated beats, guest vocals by Shadow Huntaz, MC Equivalant and others and the multi-instrumentation which has made Mad EP famous are all brought back on this artists"s heaviest and most direct album to date.

Four years have passed since Mad EP"s "Eating Movies", which have been four very busy years. Not only has Matthew Peters (Mad EP) also released two 12" on Ad Noiseam ("When I"m 6" and "Ultrafood" with Raoul Sinier), but he also delivered two more full length albums ("Not Afraid Of Spiders" on Hymen and the huge "Madlands Trilogy" on Ad Noiseam) and, finally, he took the time to write what should be considered as the definitive Mad EP album to date, "Bass.hed".

Somewhat considered as the eternal well known secret, the artist people would recommend to their friends and DJ, Mad EP has grown from the all out experimentator of "Eating Movies" to a more focused and laid back incarnation on "Bass.hed". Where "Eating Movies" and "Not Afraid Of Spiders" were wild rides through electronica, hip hop, jazz and breakcore, this new album has only one leitmotiv: bass, bass, and more bass.

Slower and heavier, "Bass.hed" is also clearly more hip hop. Featuring rhymes by Non Genetic and Breaff of the Shadowhuntaz, Berlin"s great Puppetmastaz, Akila Da Hun, Mad EP"s regular collaborator equivalent, Jadah and The Gutterbyrds, this new album"s lyric aspect doesn"t stop with Peter"s highly evocative cello, but reaches more depth and sense with these vocals. Add to this the participation of David Young (already playing trumpet on the "Madlands", Aaron Spectre and Si Begg (for some extra bass), and one gets an album which meets fulfill exactly its intention.

A lot more than a regular compilation of tracks, "Bass.hed" is a new gem from Mad EP, and something which should assure him to finally stand out as the accomplished musician he is.

They are back! Never before has a trg album been as

Announced with the "Huge Samurai Radish" single and remix CD in
December, Ra(oul Sinier)"s third studio album is follows up and
builds upon the material of his previous "Wxfdswxc2" (released on
Sublight). Intricate melodies, gritty undertones, imaginative
structures are thrown into a canvas of IDM and electronic
hip-hop, forming a tasty and tasty whole.

First discovered in 2004 by the Coredump label, Raoul Sinier
(then going by the name of "Ra") has gone a long way. Armed with
his very personal blend of gritty electronics and hip hop and his
dark but playful painting and videos, this Paris-based artist
showcase with his third full length album an incisive grim
fairytale of spicy beats, devilish little clicks and suave
melodies. Welcome to the brain kitchen.

It"s all a matter of recipe with Raoul Sinier: he had designed
the "Ultrafood" 12" with Mad EP, had told the story of the "Huge
Samurai Radish" late in 2006, which all culminates in the core of
it all, a "Brain Kitchen" in which the man is alone behind the
pans and decks.

Announced with "Huge Samurai Radish", in which his tracks got
remixed by such varied artists as Datach"I and La Caution, Wisp
and Cannibal Ox"s Vast Aire, "Brain Kitchen" sees the electronic,
strange hip hop structures of Raoul Sinier"s previous "Wxfdswxc2"
album (Sublight Records) marinate in richer, more straighter
melodies. Sliced and fried, the beats leave the foreground to
evocative and tasty theme. No matter the audience of a crowned
frog, a tiny robot or a two legged radish, here are the kind of
tracks you might tap the rhythm to, or hum in the shower.

Once again highly coherent and impossible to link to anything
else, Raoul Sinier demonstrates his talent and creating a
coherent, accessible whole out of incisive elements. Sometimes
dark, often playful, "Brain Kitchen" is the new playground for
adventurous cooks and listeners alike.

Greece"s Spyweirdos, who received a lot of attention in the recent years for his sharp and subtle glitchy electronica, pairs up this time with the two improv / free jazz musicians John Mourjopoulos and Floros Floridis. The three give birth to a surprisingly human, warm and catchy game of clicks, horns and strings. Deep, abrasive, but funky at parts: no surprise that the live rendition of this album have received excellent reviews.

Having first caught the eye of Ad Noiseam through its splendid collaboration with Larvae on the Creative Space label, Athens"s Spyros Polychronopoulos went on making a name for itself both in his home country and abroad through his remarkable "Wetsound Orchestra" (2006, Poeta Negra), as well as through highly praised live sets. An avid expert on all things glitch and clicks, Spyweirdos broke boundaries with the demo he sent to Ad Noiseam, and which ended up being this "Epistrophy At Utopia".

Collaborating with the acoustics professor and jazz musician Thessaloniki-based John Mourjopoulos and featuring the live jams of jazz and improv veteran Floros Floridis, Spyweirdos embarked here on a venture to mix his sharp and incisive glitch (it"s no surprise that he"s been remixed by Alva Noto on his previous album) and the much warmer and human instrumentation of free jazz. The result, which manages to pay homage to both Thelonious Monk (on "Epistrophy") and electronic music pioneer Raymond Scott ("Raymond Bound") is carefully crafted and still joyful, precise but hospitable album.

Prior to its release, this album has been performed several times by the trio, including a very remarked performance at the 2007 edition of the Synch Festival in Athens. Ad Noiseam is now proud to be able to present this highly enjoyable album which perfectly blends modern, challenging electronics with the warmth and attractiveness of jazz.

很早就有人向我推荐过这本书，那时它的名字还叫做《泥鸽靶》，不过因为缺货的原因买不到。后来，《泥鸽靶》重新包装为《诚信的背后》，副标题也改成“摩根斯坦利圈钱游戏黑幕”。我把书加入了豆瓣“想读”之后，很长时间忘记了这回事。最近去keso家，意外在书架上发现了它，就顺手抄回来了。

《诚信的背后》是作者的职场回忆，主要讲作者弗兰克.帕特诺伊在摩根斯坦利打工的故事。因为弗兰克在进入摩根斯坦利之前，还在第一波士顿干过，所以也可以看做对华尔街投资银行五光十色的惊鸿一瞥。弗兰克的故事讲的很浅显，对复杂的金融术语和手法进行了通俗的解释。弗兰克的立场也很简单并且政治正确，他站在普通人的角度讲金融衍生品的包装和销售，自然而然的把华尔街大鳄放上了道德法庭的审判台。

所谓金融衍生品，其实是一种并不直接存在的金融工具，其价值和其他证券联系在一起。最著名的金融衍生品应该是期权和期货。如果按存在就是合理的理论判断，衍生品自然有其存在的理由。比如国内A股被爆炒的认沽权证，现在被看做废纸一张，而当初推出认沽权证时，主要是为了解决股改对价的问题。再比如A股迟迟不能退出的股指期货，理论上也可以解决股市暴涨暴跌的问题。但是，随着衍生品的创设手段和公式越来越复杂，对衍生品的投资者来说，风险越来越大。我并不精通经济和金融，只能简单的把这个现象理解为信息不对称。

对投资股票和债券的人来说，理论很简单。股票是一家公司资本的票面价值，债券尤其是国债，是国家信用的举债，靠政府未来收入（如税收）偿还。因此，我们可以简单的判断，招商银行的股票有投资价值，中国政府发行的国库券信用等级最高。对于投资者来说，只要搞清楚招商银行的业绩和政府是否稳定就可以了。至于股价高低和债券利息是否合理，根据宏观经济的一些简单参数（如经济增长、利率、就业、通货膨胀），都不难判断。但对于衍生品而言，按照弗兰克在这本书介绍的几个案例，情况就复杂的多。经过N次辗转腾挪和包装，最终投资者买到的东西已经复杂到难以判断，于是投资者只能看到两个简单的指标，债券评级组织（对美国而言是穆迪和标普）给与的评级和利息收益。其中的风险和价格波动的参数完全不透明。之所以本书的副标题叫做“游戏黑幕”，就是指摩根斯坦利等投行利用信息不对称的手段“欺骗性”的满足客户需要，在这个过程中故意或无意的隐藏风险提示。作者把他们的这种销售过程叫做“揭客户的脸”，按照我们中国人的习惯，也可以意译为“打客户的耳光”。

本书在美国出版后，开始也默默无名。但随着摩根斯坦利的一纸声明，很快就洛阳纸贵，一度高居亚马孙的图书排行榜。作者弗兰克也成为美国著名的金融界“打假”斗士。而在中国，这本书从《泥鸽靶》到《诚信的背后》的流行，有着更为曲折和有趣的故事。具体请看南都人物周刊的一篇文章：《王都如何“拖垮”摩根士丹利》

无论是本书的内容还是“王都拖垮摩根斯坦利”的故事，都可谓“内幕”，如果不能说黑幕的话。作为非金融专业但又必须投资的读者，我想大家有必要看看这类故事书。本书故事性很强，文字平和，细节充实，充满阅读乐趣。如果说《货币战争》的阴谋论建立在作者的旁征博引和猜测的话，本书的故事却是实实在在发生过并由作者亲身经历的。

至于个人读完本书的收获，最起码是我知道了，宁肯去买“实实在在”的股票，也不要考虑商业银行里面那些挂钩这个、挂钩那个的理财产品。因为那些理财产品天花乱坠的说明书，比起股票软件的F10来说，更不靠谱儿。

昨天是我第三次做清蒸鱼，才发现原来清蒸鱼很简单。

在北京的时候，第一次做清蒸鱼，忘了用的是什么鱼了，反正有点土腥味道，那次蒸鱼还放了一些辣椒和蒜，有点像剁椒的。第二次做清蒸鱼是去年除夕，还记得前一天买的桂鱼死掉了，犹豫了半天还是扔掉了，再去买了一条。因此还被老妈嘲笑了，她说鱼要杀掉，放到第二天再做也没什么问题，而我偏要把它养到第二天，真是徒劳。

昨天买了一条小桂鱼，大概16元。先把鱼洗净，在身上两侧各切几刀，抹些盐上去，稍微腌几分钟，然后倒点料酒浸一会儿，去下腥味。过一会儿把鱼放到蒸锅上，切些细细的姜丝铺到鱼身上，鱼肚子里也少放上一些；蒸十分钟。鱼蒸好后的工作比较重要，把蒸鱼的汤倒掉，在鱼身上摆上葱丝和香菜，愿意放木耳也可以放一些熟木耳。然后倒些蒸鱼豉油，少量醋。还有最后一道工序，少烧一些色拉油，趁热浇上。

最后的油很重要，但油要少。热油让鱼的味道和葱丝、香菜的味道散发出来，很好吃。因担心凉了，被老公评价不好，照片也没有拍，不过我发现他吃得挺香。
